Foraging For Comics: The August Image Solicits

Hopefully, it won’t be a heat mirage. (Tee-hee, I made a not-so-funny).

SPAWN GODSLAYER (ONE-SHOT)
story by BRIAN HOLGUIN
art & cover by JAY ANACLETO
August 23 o 64 pages o FC o $6.99
The Old Gods are dying - slaughtered one by one by the dark blade of a mysterious, unearthly marauder. Under the protection of the goddess Llyra, the island kingdom of Endra-La, oldest and most storied of the Shrouded Isles, has avoided the cruel fate suffered by lesser kingdoms. But on the eve of a royal wedding, black sails are spotted on the horizon. Alarms are sounded and fire fills the skies. The Godslayer has come for them at last.
SPAWN: GODSLAYER is a dramatic re-imagining of TODD McFARLANE's Spawn, a sweeping tale of fallen kingdoms, ancient curses and doomed love, sure to appeal to fans of epic fantasies like Elric, Conan and The Lord of the Rings.

Well, can’t be worse than the regular book. Always thought Spawn could use a little Lovecraft, anyway.

BOMB QUEEN VS. BLACKLIGHT (ONE-SHOT)
story by SCOTT WHERLE
art & cover by JIMMIE ROBINSON
August 2 o 32 pg o FC o $3.50
"CAT FIGHT!"
It's the battle you never expected! All bets are off when Bomb Queen meets Blacklight in battle in Las Vegas! Scott (Blacklight) Wherle and Jimmie (Bomb Queen) Robinson join forces in the sexiest, funniest and wildest one-shot special of the year!

So, this is lesbian porn, right?

PHONOGRAM #1
story by KEIRON GILLEN
art & cover by JAMIE McKELVIE
August 2 o 32 pg o BW o $3.50
Phonomancer David Kohl goes hunting for new flames at a feminist festival, only to get burnt by a very old one. A Goddess scorned returns to collect her pound of flesh and demand reparations.
Phonogram: a world where music is magic, where a song can save your life… or end it.

Well, *this* looks like pretentious crap.

STAN WINSTON'S REALM OF THE CLAW GN
story by STAN WINSTON & FRANCIS TAKENAGA
art by DAVID YARDIN
cover by LIAM SHARP
August 30 o 184 pg o FC o $16.99
When zookeeper Harrison Reed becomes plagued with strange, dream-like visions, he is forced to confront the unthinkable: that he and his brother are more than they seem. With enemies lurking in every corner and the allure of power corrupting at every turn, the truth must be discovered else his world…and his sanity…will be lost forever.
Leaping from the imagination of Hollywood powerhouse STAN WINSTON, REALM OF THE CLAW is a story with bite… a vicious, bone-rattling, bloody bite!

A series from a career make-up artist whose claim to fame is producing a series of bad remakes of MST3K feature films? What could go wrong?

CASANOVA #3
story by MATT FRACTION
art & cover by GABRIEL BÁ
August 9 o 24 pg o 2C o $1.99
Cass squares his tab in blood while hunting down an E.M.P.I.R.E. artifact buried in a secret graveyard for spies somewhere in no-man's land. And just who the hell is waiting for Cass on the last page? Don't miss this latest chapter in the double-barreled brain-battering superspy epic that is CASANOVA!

I refuse to believe “squares his tab in blood” is really English. I just refuse.

THE LAST CHRISTMAS #4 (of 5)
story by GERRY DUGGAN & BRIAN POSEHN
art by RICK REMENDER & HILARY BARTA
cover by RICK REMENDER
August 23 o 32 pg o FC o $2.99
The mittens are off in this action-packed penultimate chapter. The Kid that saved Christmas needs some saving himself but does Santa have the sack for it?

This is an odd book to publish in mid-summer.

SPAWN #161
story by DAVID HINE
art by PHILIP TAN & DANNY MIKI
cover by PHILIP TAN & TODD MCFARLANE
August 30 o 32 pg o FC o $2.95
THIS IS THE BIG ONE: ARMAGEDDON!
Not a trick, not an imaginary story: The end of the world is at hand. God and Satan go head to head in the Final Conflict and as Spawn's counter heads towards zero, it looks like he is about to lose the battle to save the human race.

Given how the human race is generally portrayed in Spawn, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Darkness/Wolverine
(W) Frank Tieri (P) Tyler Kirkham (C) Stjepan Sejic
Jackie Estacado, the Darkness bearer, Wolverine have never met, but the same cannot be said for the Darkness power and Wolverine. The sins of Jackie's grandfather haven't been forgotten, and Jackie's left to pay the price. Frank Tieri (Iron Man, Deadpool, Wolverine)and Tyler Kirkham (V.I.C.E., The Gift) bring you an edge-of-your-seat story and Stjepan Sejic tops it off with his mouth-watering colors. You do NOT want to miss this book!
Full color 32 pages $2.99 one shot

See this? This is me twitching.

Covenant Movie Set
Your teenage years are a time of carefree fun, excitement, exploration and discovery. But when four teens discover they're about to become the most powerful warlocks in the world, a little fun today can mean big trouble tomorrow. When murders begin near the boys' summer camp, suspicion falls on one of their own. Can they retain their bond and discover the truth? Or will The Covenant be broken? Read the prequel that leads into the feature film coming this September from Screen Gems and director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Deep Blue Sea.) Based on the original screenplay by J.S. Cardone. Written by Aron Coleite (of the hit TV series "Crossing Jordan") with art by "Violent Messiahs'" Tone Rodriguez!

Seven bloody hells, it’s not a gorram prequel if it comes out first!

That’s all for this month. Full solicits are here. Happy Hunting. Where’s the Tylenol?

Re The Last Christmas: Brian Posehn says that the idea behind releasing the series this early is so that the trade can come out in late November and be available for the holiday.

I don't know if that bears any resemblance to reality, but that's what he said...and having this bit of unutterably useless information at my disposal, can you blame me for wanting to share it? Now that portion of my brain can be put to better use remembering something else.
