Foraging For Comics: The Marvel April Solicits

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #519 Written by J. Michael Straczynski Pencils & Cover by Mike Deodato
"NEW AVENGERS" Part 1 (of 6) Trump Tower has nothing on Spider-Man… Hold onto your hats, True Believers! Springing out of the pages of NEW AVENGERS, you won't believe what the fickle hand of fate has in store for Peter Parker, Mary Jane, and Aunt May…

I'm not thrilled about this New Avengers thing crossing over into every damn book, but that is one sweet cover. "We're here to kick ass and eat wheatcakes... and we're all out of wheatcakes."

SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #27 Written by PAUL JENKINS Pencils & Cover by MARK BUCKINGHAM
Paul Jenkins wraps up his five-year tenure as a Spider-Man writer and brings SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN to a close in a moving, self-contained tale that reunites him with artist Mark Buckingham.

Buckingham's departure was the end of this book for me, but I'll gladly come back for one last hurrah with one of my favorite Spidey creative teams ever.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #58 Written by Brian Vaughan Pencils & Cover by Stuart Immonen
"A Hard Lesson" Introducing an all-new villain to the Ultimate Universe! When a dangerous young mutant immune to psychic control takes Charles Xavier and the rest of a Manhattan bank hostage, the Professor must lead a diverse group of humans in a risky bid to end the siege.

I don't really giv e much of a damn about the Ultimate Line, but this sounds like a great story concept. Then again, so does everything Brian K. Vaughan comes up with, which leads me to alternately love and despise him.

G.L.A. #1 (of 4)
Written by Dan Slott Pencils & Cover by Paul Pelletier
They are the Great Lake Avengers, the guys who got the shortest end of the super-hero stick. But with the REAL Avengers disassembled, they're going to try to step up to the plate and deal with one of their most powerful villains! Can they save the day? Well, we just hope these guys can save themselves! THIS ISSUE: A GREAT LAKE AVENGER DIES! (Besides Mr. Immortal, duh.) Special appearances by: Captain America, Thor, the Vision, the Scarlet Witch, and Hawkeye.

I never cared a whit for these characters until Joe Kelly turned them into a brilliant bit of farce in Deadpool way back in the day. With Slott at the helm, this sounds like comedy gold.

EXILES #62 & #63 Written by Tony Bedard Penciled by Mizuki Sakakibara Cover by MIKE MCKONE
"TIME BREAKERS" It all starts here! The story where all your questions will be answered! Why is the Timebroker so evil all of a sudden?! Who are the Timebreakers?! Who's been pulling the strings all along?! And when the heck is Beak going to make himself useful?! You won't want to miss this one, folks! This is the big one! Part 1 & 2 (of 4).

Ah, the moment we've all been waiting for. And hey, nice to see McKone, the series' orignal artist, on cover duty.

FANTASTIC FOUR/SPIDER-MAN CLASSIC TPB Written by STAN LEE, BILL MANTLO, CHRIS CLAREMONT, J.M. DEMATTEIS & KURT BUSIEK Penciled by STEVE DITKO, MIKE ZECK, FRANK MILLER, JOHN BYRNE, SAL BUSCEMA & MIKE ALLRED Cover by STEVE DITKO
Marvel movie stars past and present unite in a series of senses-shattering slugfests for the ages! At the dawn of the Marvel Age, Spider-Man meets the Fantastic Four as the Chameleon strikes! Also featuring a battle royal with the Frightful Four! The first appearance of the future New Mutant known as Karma! The villainy of Dr. Doom! A date with Invisible Girl! When comics' first family and everybody's friendly neighborhood wall-crawler get together, chaos is sure to ensue! Collects AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1; SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #42; FANTASTIC FOUR #218; MARVEL TEAM-UP #100, 132-133; and UNTOLD TALES OF SPIDER-MAN '96.

This is cool, but I already have most of these in some form or another. Besides, they left out the Amazing Bag-Man. C'mon, Marvel, work with me here.
