It Begins

Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Conner has announced her plans for retirement.

If you thought the last round of judge confirmations were vicious, you ain't seen nothing yet. The next Supreme Court Justice will help determine law and precedent in this country for the next twenty years or more. Will it be a "strict constructionist," who abides by the principles and letter of the law, or an "activist judge," who promotes decisions that enforce the party line?

You only have to look back to December 2000 to see how one decision, even a heavily divided one, can affect the entire course of the nation. This nomination is the most important thing George W. Bush will do in his Presidency. And he knows it. And his opponents know it. I hope to God the American people know it as well.

Strap yourselves in, folks. It's about to get a whole lot more bumpy in here.
